The Role of the Body's Natural Defenses in the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer

Guest Speaker: David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD

Conventional oncology aims at treating cancer by destroying tumor cells. Integrative Oncology also includes strategies to change the tumor's micro-environment and to stimulate the body's natural defenses against cancer growth. Genetics account for at most 15% of cancers. The rest can be attributed to a combination of life-style and environment.

Harnessing new discoveries on the role of nutrition, physical activity, stress management and control of environmental contaminants can have a significant impact on cancer prevention, but also on slowing cancer growth and markedly improving survival as quality of life in patients already diagnosed with cancer. In view of the existing scientific evidence, modern oncology should always include a combination of conventional treatments with integrative approaches.

Dr. Servan-Schreiber is is a physician, neuroscientist, science writer and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Learn more at www.anticancerbook.com.
