Mindfulness Meditation: Presenter: Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD Dr. Kabat-Zinn's pioneering research in the field of mind-body medicine has focused on the clinical, social, and human performance effects of mindfulness meditation training in various populations. These include people with chronic pain, stress related disorders, and/or a wide range of chronic diseases. He has also explored the effects of regulated attention on healing processes, the development of psychological resilience to stress, stress in medical education, and mindfulness in the physician-patient relationship.
Lessons for Modern Medicine from Native American Healing
Presenter: Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD, PhD Overview: Indigenous healing from all continents, including Native North American healing, differs from conventional biomedicine in important ways. This healing emphasizes the role faith, hope, and belief play as they are embedded within a community and a culture. Dr. Mehl-Madrona will present his own work and that of others showing the importance of relational and cultural elements in determining the effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicine and will reflect upon research methodologies to capture these phenomena. Lewis Mehl-Madrona, MD, PhD is board certified in psychiatry and family practice and has worked in the field of integrative medicine for more than 20 years. He is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson and is the author of three books, Coyote Medicine, Coyote Healing, and Coyote Wisdom. The "Coyote Trilogy" is about the need to preserve, promote, and integrate the wisdom of indigenous health care systems with modern medicine.
Integrating Ayurveda in a Clinical Practice
Presenter: Dr. Vasant D. Lad, BAMS, MASc, Ayurvedic Physician Overview: Dr. Vasant Lad will present an overview of Ayurveda and provide an introduction to Ayurvedic clinical assessment. His lecture will cover basic concepts of individual constitution and its variations, definition of health and disease, and clinical barometers of health and disease. There will also be a demonstration of Ayurvedic clinical examination methodology and technique. Dr. Lad brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. He received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery from the University of Pune, in Pune, India in 1968 and a Master of Ayurvedic Science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India in 1980. For 3 years he served as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune, India. He also held the position of Professor of Clinical Medicine for seven years at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, where he was an instructor for many years. Dr. Lad's academic and practical training includes the study of allopathic medicine (Western Medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda. In 1979, he began traveling throughout the United States sharing his knowledge of Ayurveda, and in 1981, he returned to New Mexico to teach Ayurveda. In 1984, he founded and began as Director of The Ayurvedic Institute. Dr. Lad is the author of numerous articles and several books; Ayurveda, The Science of Self Healing, co-author of The Yoga of Herbs and Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-Healing. His book, Secrets of the Pulse, The Ancient Art of Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis, presents this fascinating subject for the first time. His work from Harmony Books, The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies, is a compendium of classic Ayurvedic treatments for common and chronic ailments. His most recent book, The Textbook of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles, is the first of a four-volume set of textbooks covering the topics he teaches in his eight-month Ayurvedic Studies Program. Dr. Lad presently is the Director of The Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico and teaches the Ayurvedic Studies Program and, for more advanced study, the Gurukula Program as well as a program in India each year. Dr. Lad also travels throughout the world, consulting privately and giving seminars on Ayurveda, its history, theory, principles and practical applications. Yoga: Its History and Clinical Application
Presenter: Sri TKV Desikachar Overview: Teaching regularly in India and worldwide, TKV Desikachar has come to be recognized as an authority in yoga, participating in many international conventions and conferences. He has authored numerous books and contributed to many magazines and newspapers throughout the world. Son and student of the yoga master T Krishnamacharya, TKV Desikachar is now one of the world's leading authorities on yoga. Starting his career as an engineer, he was inspired by the teachings of his father and became his student in the 1960's. He remained his student for over thirty years until His books include "Health, Healing and Beyond" and "The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice". He recently authored the first translation of the classical yoga text "Yogayajnavalkya Samhita". He has also co-authored with his son Kausthub, a book titled "Vedic Chant Companion". His last work "The Viniyoga of Yoga", co-authored with Kausthub and Frans Moors, deals with the application of asana and pranayama.
The Therapeutic Encounter: Fostering the Human Healing Response
Presenter: David Reilly, FRCP, MRCGP, FFHom Overview: Dr. Reilly is a physician and healer of international stature, a highly respected leader in the field of integrative medicine, and one of the most gifted speakers on mind-body health development. His main interests and skills lie in the creation of the therapeutic relationship and "therapeutic consultation", especially for those struggling with difficult and complicated health issues. He expores bridging aspects of conventional and complementary care, and the art of science and medicine. Dr. Reilly will describe his insights into the relationship of healing and the therapeutic encounter, as well as discuss how the nature of that encounter can affect healing. He graduated with commendation from Glasgow University in 1978 earning Bachelors in Medicine and Surgery (MBChb), and he completed training as a Specialist in General Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the U.K., Fellow of the Faculty of Homeopathy, Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland, and a faculty member of the Harvard Medical School. He has explored other approaches to healing, including homeopathy, acupuncture and mind-body medicine. He serves as Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medicine at Glasgow University, but his primary role is as Lead Consultant Physician at the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital, a national referral center for Integrative Care within the British National Health Service.
The History of Chinese Medicine: What Modern Health Care Systems Can Learn From the Past
Presenter: Paul U. Unschuld, PhD, MPH Overview: Dr. Unschuld is the pre-eminent scholar of the traditional medicine of China in the Western world. He is the Director of the Institute for the History of Medicine at Munich University and has taught at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. His areas of expertise include the history of medicine in China and Europe, medical ethics, and public health. Dr. Unschuld is the author of the University of California at Berkeley series on the History of Medicine in China, and has translated some of the most important ancient Chinese traditional medicine texts.
Botanicals and Women's Health: The Latest Research on PMS and Menopause
Presenter: Tieraona Low Dog, MD Overview: Dr. Low Dog's extensive career in studying herbal medicine and its role in modern health care began more than twenty years ago. After extensive experience with botanicals she went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine degree from the New Mexico School of Medicine with further training in family medicine. Prior to medical school she had a successful herbal practice in New Mexico, running a not-for-profit teaching clinic for herbalists and serving as President of the American Herbalist Guild. Her many honors of distinction in recognition of her work in herbal medicine include Time magazine's award of Innovator in Complementary and Alternative Medicine 2001. Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Low Dog to the White House Commission of Complementary and Alternative Medicine to provide legislative and administrative recommendations to the President to ensure that public policy maximizes Americans' benefits of complementary and alternative medicine. As the chair of the United States Pharmacopoeia Dietary Supplements and Botanicals Expert Committee, Dr. Low Dog helps oversee the evaluation of the safety and efficacy of dietary supplements. She currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board member for National Institutes of Health Center For Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research in Aging and Women's Health and the University of Illinois at Chicago/National Institutes of Health Center for Botanical Dietary Supplement Research in Women's Health. She is faculty through the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona, where she works with Dr. Andrew Weil's Fellowship Program in Integrative Medicine. In addition to her research, Dr. Low Dog is the author of Gifts of the Earth: The Healing Way of Herbal Medicine (Herbal Press, 1991) and Tieraona's Herbal: A Guide to Herbal Medicine (self-published, 1985). She is assistant editor in the continuing development of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine series of Micromedex, reviewing herbal and dietary supplement monographs. She has appeared on E!, ABC's 20/20 and Good Morning TV in London. She is a frequent guest on numerous radio programs in the United States and the United Kingdom, including NPR's The People's Pharmacy. Dr. Low Dog has published numerous articles on women's health including integrative approaches to pre-menstrual syndrome, menopause and breast cancer. Dr. Low Dog has also co-published on the topic of herb usage amongst Hispanic elders and in 1998, she was a recipient of the Martina de la Cruz Medal for her work with indigenous people and remedies. She is a highly sought-after speaker for medical conferences and community groups on topics ranging from the cultural aspects of alternative medicine to the current scientific information on herbs sold in the United States.
