Advancing the Field of Integrative Medicine

KanbarSpotlight: $1 million Gift to the Osher Center’s Annual Fund

In 2006, Maurice Kanbar set up a Charitable Remainder Trust in the amount of $1 Million to support the UCSF Osher Center. This year, aware of the strain the economy has placed on non-profit institutions, Maurice decided to release and distribute these funds immediately, knowing that an annual gift at this time would make a great impact on the Center’s core program.

"The UCSF Osher Center is doing great work! I am happy to support such a fine Center in our community."

-- Maurice Kanbar

The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine’s programs in research, education, and clinical care are working to transform the way healthcare is practiced. The Center’s focus on prevention, patient empowerment, and whole-person healing are critical to healthcare today. Gifts to the Annual Fund support the Center’s continued ability to do this essential work. The Annual Fund supports core activities, including:

  • Rapid response funds for pilot studies that are essential before applying for government funding;
  • Development and training of medical, nursing, and pharmacology students;
  • Multi-center clinical research;
  • Clinic expansion; and
  • Core program: administration, rent, development, and communications.

Osher Center in the Community: Education and Awareness Campaign

The Osher Center’s newsletter, website, lunchtime lecture series, and outreach campaigns are designed to empower patients and educate health care professionals, patients, and caregivers about new developments in Integrative Medicine. They provide doctors, health practitioners, and patients with reliable, evidence-based information regarding the safety and efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine.

This month we launched a multi-platform awareness campaign on billboards and shelters through out San Francisco to raise awareness about the Center's philosophy and our new clinical programs: One Day at Osher and the Complete Care Program.

We invite you to learn about how these innovative new programs can support your health and well-being by clicking: www.ucsfosher.com

Special Thanks from the UCSF Osher Center

As our fiscal year comes to an end, I want to express my sincere thanks for your thoughtful support of the UCSF Osher Center. Because of your generosity, the Center met all of its fundraising goals for the year. This has enabled us to launch new programs in research, education, and patient care. The following lists some of the work we have been able to do, thanks to your partnership and support:

  • The Community Care Fund has been able to support over 120 patient visits to those most in need of care;
  • The Healthy Lives, Healthy Families Fund supported new pilot studies in the area of adolescent and pediatric health, and a new web column to educate parents on safe and effective integrative care;
  • The Outreach and Education Program launched the "Healthy You Newsletter," a new interactive website and multiple awareness and education activities for our community; and
  • Our Annual Fund and Endowment Campaign will continue to ensure the Center's growth and success.

In the coming year, we will continue to grow our programs and opportunities for support as we prepare to move into our new home at 1545 Divisadero! I look forward to seeing you and continuing our important work together to bring prevention, patient empowerment and whole-person care to our community and beyond!
